Urban Dictionary has this definition of a Walkabout:
"A spontaneous journey through the wilderness of one's choosing in an effort to satisfy one's itchy feet, a need to be elsewhere, the craving for the open road, that space over the horizon...yes... something like that... you can't quite touch it so you have to go find it because it's you just know it's there...Or maybe it just feels good to go walking around .. Yeah. It's WALKABOUT."
Thats one opinion. For me its deeper, its includes the journey of life itself. So many turns along the way taking me left, right and yet another crossroad another decision, a job, relationship, or simply what to cook for dinner ! I reflect on all the choices I have made through life some with purpose many unconscious or emotional taking me to yet another place.
Walkabout historically refers to a rite of passage during which Indigenous male Australians would undergo a journey during adolescence, typically ages 10 to 16, and live in the wilderness for a period as long as six months to make the spiritual and traditional transition into manhood. Walkabout has come to be referred to as "temporary mobility" because its original name has been used as a derogatory term in Australian culture, demeaning its spiritual significance. So says Wikipedia.
Many people of the world today are being forced to go on a Walkabout with no choice to go or not. We, you, and I are lucky , for the most part we get to pick our Walkabouts through life. Make the best of it ! Travel, seek new relationships, preserve good one's, cherish and care for your family. Go on a Walkabout.
